How to turn a PNG into an SVG cut file

  1. Add your image. Drop in a PNG, JPG or photo, paste it with Ctrl+V, or pick one from your computer. Drop several at once to convert them all. Bigger and sharper images trace best.
  2. Pick what you’re making. Choose a preset like Layered vinyl, Photo to stencil or Laser cut, then fine-tune colours, background and clean-up while the preview updates.
  3. Set the size and download. Type the finished size, check the cut check, and download the SVG, one file per layer, a DXF or a print PNG.

What makes this converter different

  • Free colour layers. Each colour becomes its own cut layer. In Cricut Design Space, multi-layer conversion and automatic background removal need a Cricut Access subscription. Here they’re free.
  • Stacked with no gaps. Each colour slides slightly under the colour above it, so layered vinyl and cardstock line up even when placement is a little off.
  • Photo to stencil and line art. Turn a photo of a person, pet or place into a one-colour stencil, or into clean line art for engraving and colouring pages.
  • Stencil bridges. Centres of letters and shapes, like the middle of an O, get small bridges so they don’t fall out of your stencil.
  • Mirror for iron-on. One tick flips every download for heat transfer vinyl, so you can cut it shiny side down.
  • Eraser. Brush away a stray background bit and the design re-traces straight away.
  • Batch convert. Drop a stack of images and get every SVG back in one ZIP.
  • Imports at the right size. Type 4 inches or 100 mm and the file carries that real size, so you don’t have to resize after uploading.
  • Cut check before you cut. Flags pieces too small to weed, counts paths against Cricut’s 5,000-path SVG limit, and shows how heavy the file is.
  • Sticker mode. Adds a white border and a smooth cut line around your image for Print then Cut stickers.
  • Laser and print ready. Millimetre sizing, a DXF download with one layer per colour for LightBurn and other laser software, and a transparent 300 DPI PNG for printing and sublimation.
  • Private by design. The tracing engine runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored or shared.

Questions

Is it really free?

Yes. Converting, background removal, colour layers, photo stencils, batch conversion and every download format are free with no sign-up and no watermark.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The tracing runs inside your browser on your own computer. Your image is never sent to a server, so it is never stored or seen by anyone.

How do I use the SVG in Cricut Design Space?

Click Upload in Design Space, choose the SVG you downloaded, and it comes in with one layer per colour at the size you set here. Attach or weld layers as you normally would.

What is the difference between stacked and side-by-side layers?

Stacked layers slide each lower colour slightly underneath the colours above it, so layered vinyl or cardstock has no gaps if it lands a little off. Side-by-side layers never overlap, which suits printing and some laser work.

Can I turn a photo into a stencil?

Yes. Choose the Photo to stencil preset. Move Photo detail up for more detail or down for bolder shapes, and leave Stencil bridges on so the centres of shapes stay attached.

How do I mirror a design for iron-on vinyl?

Tick Mirror for iron-on (HTV) under the size. Every download is flipped, so you can cut heat transfer vinyl shiny side down without mirroring it again in Design Space.

Can I convert lots of images at once?

Yes. Choose or drop several images together. The first opens in the editor, and all of them are converted with the current settings and saved in one ZIP.

Can I use it for a laser cutter or engraver?

Yes. Use the Laser engrave, Laser cut or Photo to line art preset, set the size in millimetres, and download the SVG or the DXF file for your laser software.

Why does my image come out blocky or noisy?

Raise Clean up specks to drop tiny bits, raise Smoothness for rounder curves, or lower the number of colours. Very small or blurry images trace worse, so start from the largest copy you have.
