Character limits for X, Instagram, TikTok and Google

Common limits to check your text against. Platforms change these, so treat them as a guide:

  • X (Twitter) post: 280 characters on a free account.
  • Instagram caption: 2,200 characters, but only the first line or two show before “more”.
  • TikTok caption: a few thousand characters; keep the hook in the first line.
  • Google page title: about 50 to 60 characters before it gets cut off in results.
  • Google meta description: about 150 to 160 characters.

Reading and speaking time

Reading time assumes about 238 words a minute, a typical adult silent-reading speed. Speaking time assumes about 150 words a minute, a comfortable pace for a speech, video script or voiceover. A 1,000-word article takes roughly 4 minutes to read and about 7 minutes to say out loud.

Questions

Is my text saved or uploaded?

No. The counting happens in your browser. Your text is never sent to us or stored.

Does it count spaces?

It shows both: characters with spaces and characters without spaces.

Why does my count differ from Word or Google Docs?

Tools treat hyphenated words, numbers and symbols slightly differently, so counts can be off by a few words. For an essay with a strict limit, use the count your school or publisher asks for.
